Celebrating resilience: stories of hope and empowerment on world refugee day

Protect and educate children without fear.

World Refugee Day is an internationally recognized observance held annually on June 20th. It serves as a reminder of the plight of refugees worldwide and highlights the need for compassion, empathy, and support for those forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or violence. Supporting refugees is not only a matter of humanitarian concern but also a wise investment in a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous world.

On this day, we think of Efrata, who lost her parents and two brothers in the Ethiopian conflict. Through Children Believe’s academic and psychosocial support, she has re-enrolled in Grade 8. Likewise, Mounia, one of the 1.7 million displaced individuals in Burkina Faso, received educational and psychosocial assistance after experiencing physical and sexual assault. Now, she has resumed her studies in Grade 11 or David, an 11-year-old who was forced from his home in Ukraine, shares his struggles during the day without electricity for 15 hours, leaving him in darkness and cold. This has made attending online school nearly impossible for him. Sohaibata’s story is also not different. Of the 1.9 million people displaced in Burkina Faso, more than 61 per cent are children. According to Children Believe research, one out of every two children in the six most-affected regions have experienced or witnessed violence. Of these children, 82 percent are girls. Whether it’s Efrata in Ethiopia, or Mounia in Burkina Faso, every child deserves protection and access to a safe, inclusive, and quality education without fear.

Do not forget that understanding displacement is an ongoing process, and it requires continuous learning, empathy, and an open heart and mind. By seeking knowledge, listening to personal stories, and engaging with relevant organizations, you can deepen your understanding and contribute to creating a more compassionate and informed society.

Children’s Believe’s approach to refugees focuses on resettlement, humanitarian assistance, and integration. Today, on World Refugee Day, we urge Canadians to support children who are in need.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About Childfund Alliance:

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential. We work to end violence against children; provide expertise in emergencies and disasters to ease the harmful impact on children and their communities; and engage children and youth to create lasting change and elevate their voices in decisions that affect their lives.
