How is Africa handling global challenges like climate change?

Africa faces new hardships. Learn how we help.

Food prices, energy costs, weakening currencies, interest rates and the war in Ukraine are challenging countries around the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa where the need is growing.

In fact, the World Economic Forum reports inflation in the region is expected to remain elevated in 2022 and 2023, at 12.2 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.

And, climate change is causing concerns, too. Akinwumi Adesina, the president at the African Development Bank, told Devex heavy rainfall and droughts have cost countries about $7 billion to $15 billion a year. He also noted nine of the 10 most vulnerable countries to climate change are in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“It’s time for us to change and reform the global financial architecture, to make it more efficient, to make it able to deal with global issues at this scale,” Adesina says in the Devex report.

Adesina is not alone in his concerns. COP 27, a climate change conference, will bring world leaders together next month to action goals agreed upon under the Paris Agreement.

At Children Believe, we’re working to help vulnerable children, families and communities address climate change and other global challenges.

In Burkina Faso, a community-managed, cost-effective solar-lamp project is giving students the tools to learn efficiently. And, we’re working with our partners at the ChildFund Alliance to take joint action to influence environmental policies in many countries around the world.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About Childfund Alliance:

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential. We work to end violence against children; provide expertise in emergencies and disasters to ease the harmful impact on children and their communities; and engage children and youth to create lasting change and elevate their voices in decisions that affect their lives.
