How women’s freedoms are still being affected in the world

Learn how women stand-up for their rights and freedoms and how we are working to help women and girls around the world

You may know the name of the 22 year-old woman, Mahsa Amini. Laws enforced by the Iranian government last year caused the morality police to arrest Amini under the country’s Sharia Law, for not wearing the hijab properly. Her death on September 16, 2022-impacted people not only in Iran but also all over the world where women marched in cities including New York, Paris, London, Istanbul, Madrid, Toronto and many more in solidarity.

The morality police mainly targeted women. The states compulsory hijab rule created resistance from women as their rights weren’t equal with men and hundreds of women’s rights activists were arrested by the Iranian government for over four decades, reports The Washington Post. After the death of Mahsa Amini, it sparked nationwide protests where women risked their lives to rally together to fight for their rights and freedoms and take a stand against decades of oppression.

The fight for equality still continues in Iran as the Global News reports that suspected poisonings are targeting schoolgirls and stopping them from going to school.

Like many of the women around the world standing up for their rights and equality, at Children Believe, we are working to advance child rights and protection and promote equality for girls. We are working with communities, governments, coalitions and other to end harmful practices like child marriage and child labour.

And we want children and youth to be heard and know they are protected. We are building knowledge and skills for children, youth, families and community groups so they can influence change and overcome injustice.

For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.
