UN Women lead global gathering at Generation Equality Forum

Governments, influencers and corporations gathered from around the world to promote women’s rights

Generation Equality Forum, a three-day UN Women event held in Paris, united governments and corporations from around the world last week to talk about investments and contributions made towards women and girls.

“Women everywhere in the world are squeezed into a small corner,” Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women’s executive director was quoted as saying by UN News. During the event, she noted women make up a quarter of all managers, parliamentarians, climate change negotiators and “less than one quarter of those who negotiate peace agreements.” There is still much more work that needs to be done for gender equality.

UNESCO has launched a commitment within the next five years to achieve “tangible progress” towards gender equality. This includes supporting girls’ education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning, a financial investment of US$24 million, and continued advocacy with partners around the world.

At Children Believe, we work with our implementing partners to level the playing field for girls and women to ensure that they are given the tools to participate in decision-making in their community. In 2019/2020, we trained and supported 52,000 community members, leaders and local administrators to promote gender equality.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About Childfund Alliance

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential. We work to end violence against children; provide expertise in emergencies and disasters to ease the harmful impact on children and their communities; and engage children and youth to create lasting change and elevate their voices in decisions that affect their lives.
