Christian Children’s Fund of Canada applauds Canadian government pledge to double funding for global education

MARKHAM, Ont. (January 26, 2018) — The Government of Canada’s recent pledge to double investment in education programs for girls in developing countries is a significant step forward toward levelling the playing field for girls, says Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) CEO, Patrick Canagasingham.

“Investing in education creates opportunities and breaks barriers to change,” Canagasingham explains. “This announcement aligns with CCFC’s goals to help children grow confidently, to know their rights, and to make them less vulnerable to violence and exploitation.”

In an announcement this week at the Davos World Economic Forum that brought attention to challenges faced by girls in developing nations, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will provide an additional $180 million to the Global Partnership Education Fund in 2018-2021.

Through the generosity of Canadian donors, CCFC helps girls, women and other members of vulnerable communities around the world access the basic necessities of life, find their voice and acquire the tools for future success.

“Girls and women everywhere should have the opportunity to thrive,” adds Canagasingham. “We support them through challenging situations, such as child marriage, accessing education, and helping them gain confidence and understanding about how they can be agents of change in their own communities and countries.”
