Drones to the rescue: India tests aerial delivery of COVID-19 vaccines

Health experts note the benefits of using drones to deliver medical goods to rural parts of India

As the World Health Organization records nearly 200,000 new COVID-19 cases in India in recent days, children and families remain vulnerable to the country’s second wave of the virus. And, as one solution, India is testing the use of drones to deliver vaccines to isolated communities, reports Thomson Reuters Foundation News.

“With every dose of the COVID-19 vaccine being so important, it is critical to ensure that countries have the support and tools to deliver vaccines effectively and efficiently to those who need them,” Moz Siddiqui, head of private sector partnerships and innovation at Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, told Reuters. “Drones enable us to supplement more traditional delivery systems. They are a great, unique solution to a problem faced by multiple countries.”

Countries around the world, such as Ghana and Rwanda, are adapting a similar vaccine delivery method to reach the most vulnerable.

At Children Believe, we’re working with our program partners in India to provide relief for children and families through food rations, feminine hygiene products and support to governments and agencies with enhanced vaccine rollout, among other initiatives.
