Survey: India is most dangerous country for women

Thomson Reuters Foundation annual poll shows countries of concern for women

India is the most dangerous country for women, according to Thomson Reuters Foundation’s eighth annual perception poll involving nearly 550 respondents from around the world.

Why has India risen to the top? “The risk of sexual violence and harassment against women, the danger women face from cultural, tribal and traditional practices, and [it’s] the country where women are most in danger of human trafficking, including forced labour, sex slavery and domestic servitude,” reads the online survey results.

Thomson Reuters Foundation asked women-issue experts which of the 193 United Nations’ member states they thought were most dangerous to women with regard to healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual violence, non-sexual violence and human trafficking.

The top 10 list includes India, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, DRC, Yemen, Nigeria and the U.S.A.

Christian Children’s Fund of Canada believes in promoting gender equality. Whether educating communities on the dangers of early and forced marriages in India and Africa or giving girls the confidence and skills to succeed in each community where we work. We believe in working with the vulnerable, so they can meet their full potential.
