As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, finding effective solutions has become more urgent than ever. In the quest for sustainable strategies, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) play a pivotal role. However, historically, these fields have been dominated by men, perpetuating the stereotype that girls may not possess the same potential in STEM. In reality, girls can be a formidable force in climate change mitigation.
Children Believe wants to shed light on the untapped potential of girls in STEM and draw attention to how their involvement can help to address the global climate crisis. Providing girls with green skills has the potential for reshaping the world of work and environmental conservation in a number of ways:
- Preparing for a Green Future:
The world is transitioning to a greener future, one that demands a skilled workforce proficient in sustainable technologies and practices. By equipping girls with green skills, they are prepared to actively participate in the evolving economy, becoming catalysts for environmental change and resilience. Examples include organic farming, permaculture, agroecology and sustainable land management to promote environmentally friendly and resource-efficient agricultural practices. Also, advancements in water conservation, water treatment and wastewater management help to ensure the sustainable use and protection of water resources.
- Overcoming Gender Gaps in STEM:
Historically, girls and women have faced barriers in pursuing STEM careers. A green learning agenda bridges this gender gap, ensuring girls have equal access to STEM education and opportunities in aerospace engineering, astrophysics, the environment, sustainability projects and addressing issues related to climate change and conservation. By addressing this disparity, we create a diverse and inclusive workforce that can better address complex environmental challenges.
- Empowering Girls to Redefine Economic Systems:
A green learning agenda is not just about fitting into the existing green job market; it is about empowering girls to redefine and transform economic systems. Girls’ education has far-reaching social impacts. For every additional year of schooling a girl receives, her future earnings increase by 10 to 20 percent. This translates to better economic opportunities and improved living standards for individuals and their families. - Promoting Women’s Leadership in Sustainability:
Empowering girls with green skills makes it possible for future women to be leaders in sustainability. By encouraging girls to take on leadership roles in environmental initiatives, we pave the way for diverse perspectives and holistic approaches to tackle climate change.
- Building Climate Resilience:
Green skills encompass not only technical knowledge but also resilience and adaptability. Educating girls in sustainable practices equips them with the tools to address climate change impacts and contribute to building resilient communities. A survey conducted across 123 countries revealed that only 20 percent of students felt adequately informed about climate change. Through a green learning agenda, girls not only gain access to green jobs, but also have the potential to redefine economic systems and drive innovative solutions to environmental challenges. As Children Believe works towards a greener world, let’s recognize the pivotal role girls and women play in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
